June 23, 2015 – Suddenly men buy their razor blades online. In the US, the market doubled in a year and a Dutch startup also saw a sharp rise in sales.
Gillette will not be happy with the sudden popularity of razor blades you buy online. On the shop floor, the daughter of giant Procter & Gamble in the United States has a market share of more than 60 percent; online that would only be a quarter.
In America there is a new big player online: the Dollar Shave Club. A few years ago, it was no more than a start-up with provocative commercials that opposed the established brands. But now the company has 2 million customers. They can choose from subscriptions with which they automatically receive razor blades.

On Monday it was announced that the Dollar Shave Club raised $ 75 million from investors, valuing the company at $ 615 million. This year, the internet shop is expected to sell about $ 140 million, says founder Michael Dubin opposite The Wall Street Journal.
Internet sales of razor blades now account for about 8 percent of the total market of roughly 3 billion dollars in the US.
In the Netherlands, the company Boldking has been working on the road since 2013. The Amsterdam company profiles itself with its own brand of razor blades, packed in a stylish box. At the first shipment you receive a holder and used razor blades can be returned to be recycled.
“The market is also developing rapidly in the Netherlands,” says Rochdi Darrazi (34). With Tibo Thijs Diepenhorst (30) he is the founder of Boldking. “I can not give exact figures – that is very sensitive in this market – but we have many tens of thousands of customers.”
